Small fruit making a big mark with local grocers

The convenience factor has finally hit the produce market as the Cuties brand, a seedless, sweet and easy-to-peel mandarin, hits the ground running. The Wall Street Journal highlights the brand as “the most profitable citrus in America” and has caused many farmers in California to re-consider planting this new American favorite. Now, Cuties is expanding distribution to the east coast as they are seeing increased competition from new brands such as Darling Clementines, Delite, Clem’NTina’s and Bee Sweet.

While it has yet to be confirmed, numerous sources are speculating about a retail location opening for the chocolate company on Water Street– 213 Water Street to be exact. The shop will have a retail and exhibit on-site.

Restaurant job growth surpasses national job growth rates

The National Restaurant Association reports that in one year (June 2011 – June 2012), the restaurant industry is outpacing the national job growth rate of 1.3 percent with a rate 2.7 percent. This is huge in national economic recovery efforts. Since 2010, the restaurant industry has added more than 575,000 jobs and maintains 10% of the total U.S. workforce.

Although it was short-lived, The Meatball Factory did strike up a lot of buzz for their grand opening in October 2011 for having Top Chef contestant Dave Martin on board and being a competitor to the well-known Meatball Shop empire.
