Hot Bread Kitchen, a non-profit that helps low-income and foreign-born women gain access to the specialty food industry, opened its first retail location for their signature breads inside of Spanish Harlem’s La Marqueta. The new bread bakery opened yesterday and showcases a full line of Hot Bread Kitchen products which includes corn tortillas, lavash crackers, bialy and more.

Murray’s Cheese Bar opens this week in the West Villaage
Opening three doors down from the mothership location, Murray’s Cheese Bar will offer everything that is “cheesy” in a restaurant-like setting. Chef fromager Tia Keenan spearheads the 56-seater space’s menu.

Blue Collar is now open in Williamsburg
This new burger spot is similar to the staple In-N-Out Burger from the west coast with their signature flat-bread burger. The menu includes burgers, cheeseburgers, double cheeseburgers, hot dogs and shakes.

Food Bank for NYC & the Mario Batali Foundation launches Community Cookshop
Last week, the Food Bank for NYC and the Mario Batali Foundation launched a program called Community Cookshop to offer hands-on classes about nutrition education. The program is available to low-income New Yorkers and will run until August 17th.
Using Mario Batali’s recipes, the classes will show people how to maximize their budget while preparing a nutritious meal
The Meatball Shop is coming to the Upper East Side in 2013
The winter season will open arms to The Meatball Shop’s expected opening for early 2013. The owners (Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow) just reported to Eater NY that they have signed a lease for a location on 2nd Avenue between 76th and 77th Street.
The space will host 70 seats with a private dining area
Retail food prices declined slightly in the second quarter
After an increase in the first quarter of 2012, dairy, eggs and meat see a slight drop in retail prices for the second quarter. The American Farm Bureau Federation Marketbasket Survey shows that the total cost of 16 food items used to prepare traditional meals at home is down by 3%.
One factor contributing to the decline in retail prices is lower wholesale meat prices

Opening Update: Sullivan Street Bakery opens 2nd location in the Chelsea area
The bakery opened its doors last week Wednesday with much anticipation from their loyal fan base. The second Sullivan Street outpost is baking traditional favorites on-site such as the olive oil cake, cornetti, bombolonis and much more with Italian groceries for sale.
