Will Legal Marijuana Create New Restaurant Opportunities?
“If you’ve been to a food conference lately you’ll notice there’s at least one session talking about cannabis, CBD, cannabinoids, or whatever term we’re using now. I’ve been to two conferences in recent weeks that addressed the topic and I’m writing this post while in California, where voters legalized recreational use of marijuana via referendum in 2016. Therefore, I have pot on the brain — so to speak.
At NPD we’re always analyzing how trends affect the food and beverage industry and if you talk to a — what shall we call them, “pot enthusiasts” — you’ll know food plays a major role when they use marijuana. This can be from how they ingest the marijuana to the munchies leading them to eat a variety of indulgent foods.
We took a look in our SnackTrack information, which monitors the consumption of ready-to-eat, convenience-oriented snack foods in the U.S., to see if there are changes since legalization occurred. In those states that legalized recreational marijuana, brownie consumption has increased a whopping 107 percent compared to pre-legalization times. Chewy candies, which had a stable consumption level for years, grew by 17 percent after legalization, and fruit snacks also increased after legalization.
I’m not sure yet if this is a result of the munchies, pot brownies or gummies, and all I can fully say with confidence is these changes are correlations. However, these correlations are in line with what we’ve known anecdotally for some time about recreational pot usage and can point to growth opportunities should more states allow it.”

Flatiron Plaza Food & Beverage Kiosk RFPs
The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership (BID) is seeking proposals from qualified firms to manage and operate an outdoor food or beverage kiosk (“Kiosk”) in the Flatiron North Public Plaza, located at 23rd Street, Broadway, and Fifth Avenue, and the Flatiron South Public Plaza, located on Broadway between 22nd and 23rd Streets, adjacent the famed Flatiron Building.
Created by the by the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) in 2008, the Flatiron Public Plazas have become town squares, where countless residents, employees in the neighborhood, and visitors from around the world converge each day. The BID has a concession license agreement with DOT for the operation, management, and maintenance of the Plazas which allows for the operation and management of subconcession(s).
It is the goal of the BID to draw customers to a successfully-branded food or beverage kiosk that is successful and enhances the atmosphere and experience of the Flatiron Public Plazas and this vibrant neighborhood.
A nonmandatory pre-bid conference will be held on Thursday, January 24th at 10 am at the office of the Flatiron BID (27 West 24th Street, Suite 800B). The pre-bid conference will include a site visit to the Flatiron Public Plazas. Questions related to the RFPs should be submitted in writing to the BID no later than Friday, February 1st at 5 pm. All proposals are due by 5 pm on Friday, February 22, 2019.

Dark Chocolate Oreos Are a New Permanent Flavor Hitting Shelves Soon
“Oreo‘s newest flavor isn’t as crazy as their usual offerings—and even more surprising, it’s here to stay.
The beloved cookie company announced on Wednesday that Dark Chocolate Oreos will become a permanent flavor hitting shelves next year. The brand decided to announce the news timed to the upcoming winter solstice, the day with the shortest period of daylight (so the darkest day of the year), on Dec. 21 even though the cookies won’t hit stands until Jan. 2.
The new treats come with a dark chocolate creme—”made with real cocoa” as touted on the packaging—sandwiched between their classic chocolate wafers.”

The South Street Seaport restaurant will channel a winter chalet and features special dishes like a “gingernut pizza,” made with ginger crust, eggnog frosting, spicy pecans, candy canes, and sprinkles. Drinks include a large format frozen cocktail made with Baileys, candy canes, peppermint bark, and pretzel rods. The spiked hot chocolate has Nutella. Now open at 70 South St.

Start-Up Spacious has a Vision for New York Restaurants
As more and more businesses (particularly in the tech start-up sphere) forego traditional offices, the demand for alternative working spaces will continue to increase. The new start-up Spacious seeks to capitalize on that, by turning dinner-only restaurants into co-working space during the day. Spacious owner Preston Pesek sees it as a way to “reclaim the city for creative professionals.”
A Spacious membership costs $95 per month, and includes unlimited access to their available workspaces, as well as WiFi, coffee, water, and conference rooms. Currently their only actual space is Daniel Boulud’s DBGB Kitchen and Bar, so Spacious is offering a 20% sign-on discount for members who join now. Eventually they hope to add more options throughout the city, and possibly include lunch in the offer as well.
The benefit to the restaurant (besides exposure) is a profit-sharing agreement, but in some cases the exposure might be enough to justify the risk. According to a DBGB manager, the partnership has already brought more dinner traffic to the restaurant from Spacious members who see the space during the day and invite back larger crowds at night.
