Pastrami Queen is opening a Times Square location

More than 60-year-old Jewish deli Pastrami Queen is making its way to Times Square. The popular Kosher deli known for a thick-cut, crumbly version of pastrami — and for being a go-to for the late Anthony Bourdain — will soon have an outpost at 230 West 49th St., between Broadway and Eighth Avenue.

It’s the second location for the restaurant, which had a dramatic move to Upper East Side from its longtime Queens home in 1998; a name swap to Pastrami Queen from Pastrami King accompanied the relocation.

Calorie Counts on Menus Slow Down Some Diners

Better data leads to better decision-making — except when it comes to dessert.

Calorie counts printed on restaurant menus prompt diners to consume less. Cornell University’s John Cawley and his co-authors collected detailed data from two restaurants, taking down numbers on everything from individual food orders to whether patrons shared a plate over the course of thousands of visits. They found that printed calorie information reduced calories ordered by 3 percent (or 45 calories a meal, roughly equivalent to a large plum or an Oreo cookie). That decrease came from entrees and appetizers, not from drinks or desserts.

Energy drinks get a healthy makeover with help from MatchaBar

On Tuesday, MatchaBar released the first sparkling matcha energy drink. The brand is known for its ceremonial grade matcha, which can be found in 1,000 retailers nationwide as well as its three namesake cafes in New York and Los Angeles. Available in regular or sugar-free, the new product contains 120mg of caffeine per can, which is similar to a Red Bull.

The difference, of course, is the ingredients. It incorporates tea as well as antioxidant-rich juice extracts, thereby making a healthier version of its more chemical-laden competitors. See a MatchaBar story below.

To celebrate the new launch, MatchBar partnered with Whole Foods and Facebook for a social media campaign dubbed “Gift The Hustle.” Fans can now send a coupon for a free can of MatchaBar Hustle through Messenger to their friends, redeemable at the nationwide retailer.

Inspired Indoor-Outdoor Bar in Williamsburg

“The Woods Team Expands With ’80s Surfer-Inspired Indoor-Outdoor Bar in Williamsburg. Right under the BQE at 307 Meeker Ave. at Frost Street, the Breakers fills 2,500 square feet with neon signs, saturated colors, and skateboards and surfboards. The style pulls from ’80s surfing and skateboarding looks, with a little dose of disco in the mix, Rosen says. An elaborate mural on the floor, for instance, is inspired by skateboard design.

For drinks, the Breakers goes hard on tiki-inspired draft cocktails. The bar stocks 15 of them, including a zombie, rum punch, and ginger mai tai. All cost $10, with the exception of a Sex on the Beach, which will always be $5.”

Managing director Laurent Marcel told the news service that the fund is looking at sectors ranging from healthy drinks, snacks and baby food to alternative protein sources. The investment fund is also looking at areas throughout the entire agri-food chain for companies to purchase, including those that focus on everything from organic farming to new protein sources.

Finding new protein sources will be a big challenge for the planet in coming year,” Marcel told Reuters. “Many companies are searching for non-animal proteins. This is typically a sector we could invest in.” The fund also hopes to find ways to attract new customers, such as subscription-based business models and home delivery.
