With Instagram growing from 5 million to 30 million users since its October 2010 launch, you can say that this new social media platform is making a big mark against Facebook and Twitter– with Facebook acquiring the photo sharing company for $1 billion in April. Brian Zuercher, Founder of social media photo aggregation company VenueSeen, shows us that 60% of Instagram users are sharing food and drink photos prompting more restaurants to get in on the action. Brands like Starbucks, Red Mango, Caribou Coffee, Dunkin’ Donuts and much more are sharing new menu items, using photo contests and other digital markting techniques to increase the overall
guest experience.

Food Marketing: Facebook vs. Instagram
Retail food prices declined slightly in the second quarter
After an increase in the first quarter of 2012, dairy, eggs and meat see a slight drop in retail prices for the second quarter. The American Farm Bureau Federation Marketbasket Survey shows that the total cost of 16 food items used to prepare traditional meals at home is down by 3%.
One factor contributing to the decline in retail prices is lower wholesale meat prices
Small fruit making a big mark with local grocers
The convenience factor has finally hit the produce market as the Cuties brand, a seedless, sweet and easy-to-peel mandarin, hits the ground running. The Wall Street Journal highlights the brand as “the most profitable citrus in America” and has caused many farmers in California to re-consider planting this new American favorite. Now, Cuties is expanding distribution to the east coast as they are seeing increased competition from new brands such as Darling Clementines, Delite, Clem’NTina’s and Bee Sweet.
What other some other fruits that could be revamped for convenience?
Restaurant job growth surpasses national job growth rates
The National Restaurant Association reports that in one year (June 2011 – June 2012), the restaurant industry is outpacing the national job growth rate of 1.3 percent with a rate 2.7 percent. This is huge in national economic recovery efforts. Since 2010, the restaurant industry has added more than 575,000 jobs and maintains 10% of the total U.S. workforce.
20 percent of restaurant operators are planning to increase staffing for the second half of 2012
Women emerge in the craft beer industry
Craft beer is gaining more market share over corporate beer companies with sales increasing by 5.7 percent in volume and 9.1 percent in dollars as reported by the Brewers Association. Along with this, women are now getting into micro-brewed hops from managing on-site fermentation and consumption to social media/blogging and tasting social clubs.
The Brewers Association also reports that mass-produced American beer sales fell by 1% in 2011
New business model for local agriculture and small-scale farms
Local is the way to go. Mass production farms are losing to the heightened stability and appeal of local farms. As the movement for local food increases, small-scale farms are introduced with new ways to fund and maintain daily farming activities. Things like the slow money movement which channels money into small-scale food operations, local restaurants ans stores buying local, and consumer awareness allows for the industry to be a bit more predictable and profitable.
Now, a new funding source emerges on the scene to help local farms. Community by Design, inspired by the slow money movement, started near Portland, CO by Narendra Varma who invest $2 million in a 56-acre project last year. Community by Design acts as a vehicle for financing local, organic food production through groups like Slow Money– which currently received $4 million out of the total $18 million raised by Slow Money in the past two years.
What do you think of the future of local farms vs. mass production farms? Do you think that the economic outlook for these farms will stabilize in the next 5 years?
