June 6th: The 2016 Welcome Conference

On June 6th, the Welcome Conference  will return with the theme “Being Present.” The Welcome Conference is an annual forum for those in the hospitality industry, (and those who bring hospitality to other industries) to exchange ideas and perspectives, and to establish new connections. Last year’s theme focused on the idea of “Being Right,” and featured talks by Steve Ells, Sarah Robbins, Bill Golderer and Jon Batiste, among others.

This year’s attendees can attend forums with some of the most creative and passionate individuals in the industry on:

1. Being present as individuals – giving ourselves the time and grace to contemplate life rather than rushing through it.

2. Being present with each other –  putting aside all of our to dos and distractions and truly, deliberately connecting with those around us.

3. Being present at work – allowing ourselves to engage deeply in one thing at a time and questioning whether multitasking is always the most efficient approach to take.

Tickets go on sale April 26th. For more information about the conference, click here.

Celebrate Some of New York’s Greatest Food Halls with Open House New York

Eataly_IMG_3220_digi-AZ.jpgThe Nonprofit Open House New York states as their mission “promoting a greater appreciation of the city’s built environment; broadens public awareness by exposing diverse audiences to distinctive examples of architecture, engineering and design,” and what’s a more impressive feat of engineering and design than the city’s food system, which brings some of the greatest food in the world to millions every day?

That’s why OHNY hosts a series of public programs they call “The Final Mile” about this very system, in order to make what is largely invisible more transparent for all. For Winter 2016, this programming focuses on food halls in modern life. With a series of tours of some of the city’s best-loved food halls. These tours kick off with Eataly on February 19th, Berg’n on the 24th, Le District on March 3rd, and Gotham West on March 8th. Tickets to each are sold individually, so you can visit one or all depending on your interests.

Slow Food NYC’s Food Almanac 2016

Slow Food NYC (SFNYC) will be hosting their 6th annual “Food Almanac” on February 9th at the Brooklyn Winery. The event is inspired by the original Farmer’s Almanac, which was used by farmers to predict the weather and plan plantings for the year to come. SFNYC’s version allows industry experts and food activists to discuss what’s in store for our local food system. This year’s theme focuses on food wages: the Fight for $15, the no-tipping movement, and what they mean for both restaurant workers and farmers.

The Food Almanac will also feature treats and eats from Brooklyn Winery, including beer, wine, and seasonal snacks. Proceeds benefit SFNYC’s Urban Harvest program, a nonprofit food educational program for children in NYC public schools.

Queens Night Market is Back, and Looking for Vendors

Last year, the  Queens International Night Market debuted in Flushing Meadows with 40 food vendors a night and an average of 6,000 guests each Saturday coming to celebrate the delicious diversity of the borough. This year they’ll return with even bigger plans, including 50 to 60 vendors a night according to organizer John Wang.

The market will be open on Saturdays from 6 to midnight, beginning April 23rd and running through August when the U.S. Open takes over the park. They are still accepting applications for vendors, and you can apply online here. The application stresses that while there are no restrictions on what can be sold, they “want you to share your cultural influences with our visitors and to be willing to share the story behind what you are offering or selling and why it is important to you and your heritage.”
