Subway to Open Pizza Concept

Following in the footsteps of fast casuals branching out into the pizzeria territory, Subway plans to open Subway Pizza Express at University of Nebraska-Lincoln in early 2014. The concept focuses on customizable, made-to-order personal pizzas. Pricing will be similar to Subway’s, falling in the $4-6 range per pizza.

Shake Shack Moscow Opens Today

With a couple of modifications including a small price increase for the Shackburger and a concrete dubbed The Great Wintry Way, Shake Shack Moscow is identical to its foreign predecessors. Russian speakers can read the menu in Cyrillic on the Shake Shake site; however New York Magazine has provided a user-friendly translation.

Fung Tu: Per Se Alum’s Chinese-American Restaurant

Fung Tu, a vanguard, casual Chinese-American restaurant, has arrived on 22 Orchard Street on the cusp of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. Experienced restaurateurs are behind the project including Per Se’s Jonathan Wu, Nom Wah Tea Parlor owner Wilson Tang, Mas farmhouse’s John Wells and Nellcôte (in Chicago) vet Jason Wagner. Forward-thinking asian delicacies like silken-fish doufu with dried beef and seaweed, and peanut butter and chocolate ganache sesame balls embody the unconventional (in the best sense) Chinese cuisine.

Maison Ladurée to Open in Soho

The downtown outpost of this charming macaroon parlor will premiere in Soho mid-January. There will be a few slight changes to Ladurée’s new location including a much larger space, full-service restaurant, large outdoor vicinity and a retail shop.

Umami Burger Founders Introduce “Build-Your-Own” Pizza

In last week’s Enterprise Insight we discussed the benefits of assembly lines. On that note, the LA-based restaurant group that founded Umami burger announced their newest project 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria, making its way to New York in the near future. The model will be a “build-your-own” assembly-line-style fast-casual restaurant serving $5-$7 pizzas. The minds behind Umami burger know how to cater to customers’ fast-paced schedules; each pizza only take 1 minute to cook.

Eataly Chicago Opens Next Week

Chicago will welcome Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s gargantuan Italian market, Eataly, on December 2nd. Not only is this Eataly 30% larger than the original New York location, but it will also feature a Nutella bar to sate customers’ “spuntino,” or snack, cravings and a white tablecloth restaurant, “Baffo,” set to open December 10th, that will serve higher-end delicacies including fresh pastas and salumi.

Whynot Coffee Now Open in Lower East Side

The first Whynot Coffee premiered in May in the West Village, and the successful coffee shop most recently expanded to 75 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. Each location will have a theme emblematic with its surrounding neighborhood; the West Village venue is reminiscent of sixties Paris and the upcoming East Village retailer will be entrenched in tattoo culture. The 75 Orchard Street outpost highlights art from a wide selection of artists and offers free WiFi. This location also serves blue bottle coffee and pastries from Mille-Feuille. Because, why not?

Whole Foods Coming to Gowanus

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 17th— Whole Foods will be making its grand premier on Third and 3rd in Gowanus, Brooklyn, after eight tedious years of construction. This isn’t just any Whole Foods— the most highly-anticipated Brooklyn location will boast a rooftop farm and beer bar, a take-out noodle shop from Yuji Ramen and an array of artisinal specialties from Brooklyn producers.

“Food Box” Specialty Market Opens in Long Island City

Jamestown Properties, owners of Chelsea Market, recently opened “Food Box,” Long Island City, Queens’ newest specialty food market, inside the Falchi Building. So far four vendors have claimed their territory, selling Jamaican, Peruvian, Thai and Texan specialties, and an artisinal cheese shop is in the works. Food Box could just be be the “Chelsea Market” Long Island City has been longing for.

M. Wells Steakhouse Opens Tomorrow

Eater announces husband and wife chef-owners Hugue Dufour and Sarah Obraitis, of the original M. Wells and the current M. Wells Dinette, will welcome their third M. Wells sensation tomorrow. Dufour hopes to serve delicacies such as lion meat and rattlesnake at M. Wells Steakhouse in Long Island City, Queens. A wood-fired grill, dessert cart, live lobsters and sea urchins are not out of the question either.

M. Wells Steakhouse will be open nightly for dinner except for Tuesdays, not including tomorrow’s opening day.
