Happy New Year!

Another year is soon behind us and a new one awaits, we are excited for this upcoming year, as we are every year.  This time of year gives us all a moment to think about how the past year has been and how and where we want the new one to head.  Each year, we formulate a personal and business strategic plan.   Yes, sometimes these can sound daunting and too big to really tackle, but our thought is, be kind to your self and in turn to your business.   A strategic plan can be as simple as listing out the Top 5 Milestones you seek in the year ahead.  This could be anything from new staff uniforms to building an e-commerce site to juicing more. When identifying Milestones, it is important that they are realistic and attainable. In doing so, ask yourself the following 3 questions.

1) What 3 processes work well in your business that you should continue?
2) What 3 processes don’t work well in your business that you should stop?
3) What 3 processes are you currently not doing that you should add to your business?

These questions are a great way to analyze current and future operations. It is never too late and always just in time to start the strategic planning for your business.

We have had such a fabulous year in 2012, met so many wonderful clients and colleagues and we thank all of you for letting us be a small part of your journey.  May 2013 bring you joy, health and happiness.

Happy New Year… TaraPaige Group

Breadcrumb Announces Upgrades

Breadcrumb has unveiled an upgrade to its iPad POS for restaurants, bars and cafes. Fast Casual reports Breadcrumb 1.2 makes daily operation faster and easier.

Highlights of Breadcrumb 1.2 include:

  • Smart swipe: Swiping a credit card automatically opens a tab in the cardholder’s name, recalls an open tab or processes payment — without having to type in more information or navigate extra steps;
  • Quicker PIN-based access to terminals with fewer keystrokes;
  • Simpler process for complex charges: Breadcrumb makes it easy to split a balance evenly across a number of cards or across a combination of cash and cards; and
  • Rapid order entry, including new single-touch order modifications for customizations, such as cooking temperature.

Insights on Running a Western Business in China

Western concepts are expanding rapidly in China, but an operator who folded last year after realizing how difficult it was to operate there has written a tell-all.

Four years ago in Beijing, Wen-Szu Lin and his business partner, both Wharton MBAs, opened Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, a U.S.-based chain with more than 1,200 locations in 46 states and 23 countries. The stores closed last year, however, and Lin has recently published a book, “The China Twist,” describing the various incidents they faced while running a Western concept in China.

December is a Month of Tops: is 2012 Year of the List?

Every page we’ve turned this week featured a list. After all the events, parties, and working around food daily, these lists still make us hungry for more. 2012 may just be the year of the list.

Food Republic‘s Editor writes of memorable meals, while the New York Times‘s Critic writes about some (sleeper and standout) hits of 2012. New York Magazine’s Adam Platt simply tells us where to eat in 2013.

Eater ran a list, by a large number of food journalists, on Chefs and Restaurateurs to Watch in 2013.

Serious trade journal Nation’s Restaurant News ran down top stories of 2012, which is a good summation of trends.

For those of us who can’t get enough recipes or recipe reading, Huffington Post scours the media for the Best Recipes of the Year .
