It’s not just Starbucks that is marketing to this new demographic of light roast lovers, coffee roasters such as Intelligensia, Blue Bottle and Handsome Coffee are noted for their light-roast only mantra.
Starbucks also conducted a study of coffee roasted to various degrees of darkness and documented that 42% of taste testes preferred the lighter roast
On the heels of the Starbucks blonde, more coffee retailers will begin to feature their own edition to the lighter roast

The first New York location opened in Times Square towards the end of August last year. Now, with two Upper West Side locations and one in Times Square, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is growing at a fast pace in New York.

Starbucks adds beer and wine to drive in more evening sales
Testing for the new menu offerings are being analyzed in 5 Seattle locations. The Olive Way, Seattle location was the first to have the new menu additions implemented and has reported double-digit same-store-sales after 4pm.
Beer and wine will be tested next in Southern California, Atlanta and Chicago
7th Annual New York Coffee & Tea Festival
The Northeast Barista Competition will be a treat for those who attend as well as various tea cuppings and other lecture programs.
The festival will be hosted at 7 W 34th Street between 5th/6th Avenue on February 25th – 26th
Porto Rico Importing Co. closed their Soho location as the new year rolled in. The original shop on Bleecker Street will continue operation.
The store which has been opened for over 45 years will be closed due to rent increase.

Haven’s Kitchen opens tomorrow, January 19th, in the Chelsea area offering recreational culinary classes, an event space and retail shop with coffee, pastries and kitchen supplies

Alison Schneider, owner of Haven’s Kitchen, saw the need for something more in the food industry surrounding sustainability, education and just plain fun– which is what Haven’s kitchen is all about. Culinary classes will be available next week, January 23rd, for registration.
Haven’s Kitchen is located on 109 West 17th Street between 7th and 8th Ave
Demi Monde is set to bring cocktails and coffee to the Financial District very soon
The new hybrid coffee-cockatil bar will be partnering up with Los Angeles’ Handsome Coffee Roasters to introduce what we’d like to call the “caffineated fix”.
Demi Monde is located on 90 Broad Street (near Bridge Street). There is no word out yet on an exact opening date

The coffee bar which opened last week Wednesday, January 4th, plays records on old-school vinyl with a selection of baked goods.

Rain damage in Central America puts a damper on the arabica coffee bean
This might relate to some of the reasoning behind the coffee price hike at Starbucks on the East Coast. Many coffee roasters are trying their best not sacrifice quality and keep up with tight arabica supplies but the increasing prices makes it hard to do so.
Coffee roasters are now supplementing the arabica beans with robusta blends causing a more bittery taste which could be a turn off to consumers. Supplies of the arabica coffee bean will remain stagnant until Brazil’s harvest in mid-2012
