Brooklyn Grange Using Solar-Powered Composting System

DNA info reports that Brooklyn Grange, the Queens Rooftop farm on Northern Boulevard, is now home to a solar-powered composting system that breaks down food scraps collected from neighborhood residents and restaurants.

The system is the handiwork of the Sanitation Department’s NYC Compost Project Local Organics Recovery Program, hosted by Build It! Green NYC, an Astoria nonprofit that sells salvaged building materials.

“Since the farm is on a rooftop, we chose to take advantage of all the sunlight that’s up there,” said Chris Bivens, a project coordinator for the Compost Project, which encourages residents to compost as a way to cut back on the amount of food waste they discard.

News on the Minimum Wage Increase from NYSRA

We received this breaking news from the New York State Restaurant Association:

Governor Cuomo, Speaker Silver and Senate Co-Presidents Skelos and Klein have just announced an agreement on the New York State Budget that includes a minimum wage increase.
We are pleased to announce that instead of increasing the minimum wage all at once, it will be phased in over three increases. The final increase will go to $9.00 an hour by the end of 2015. There was no mention of indexing the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index and it is believed that the language has been removed.

There has been no official announcement on the cash wage for tipped foodservice workers at this time. Budget bills are being printed as you read this and we will release more information as it becomes available.

Dining Image: Josh Capon Builds a Website in the Time it Takes to Eat a Burger

We couldn’t help but me amused by this video featuring Josh Capon  for Dining Image, the DIY restaurant website builder. For a fully integrated site, costs run as low as $100 per month, and they’re showing an impressive roster of users.

Have you made the switch to DIY? If so, we’d love to hear about your experience.
