NYC’s favorite tourist-destination food hall Chelsea Market now has a new restaurant-cafe-home design shop. Blackbarn — selling furniture, home goods, and food — has opened on the ground floor of the market, serving cafe fare like paninis and traditional entrees such as beef short rib.
The business is a collaboration between chef John Doherty, a former Waldorf-Astoria chef, interior designer Mark Zeff, and Zeff’s wife Kristen, inspired by the Zeffs’ home in the Hamptons. They’re calling it a “lifestyle brand”; everything used in the restaurant can be purchased in the retail store.

Back in December, Eater reported the arrival of Lyric Market, Houston’s newest food hall. Planned for the city’s Theatre District, early signs indicate that it’s going to be seriously awesome.
The project, a brainchild of real estate developer Jonathan Enav, is set to arrive at 411 Smith Street later this year. According to a press release, Lyric Center Market will occupy a massive 31,000 square feet, complete with an underground speakeasy, open-air terrace, and private dining rooms. Clark Cooper Concepts, the restaurant group behind eateries like Ibiza Food and Wine Bar, Brasserie 19, and Punk’s Simple Southern Food, has been tapped to help Enav curate a selection of diverse and exciting tenants inside the Market.

Move over Soylent: Silicon Valley’s obsession du jour is raw water, or spring water that has not been filtered or treated in any way, according to a recent report in the New York Times.
It’s apparently flying off the shelves in San Francisco. But is it beneficial or safe? Here’s everything you need to know about raw water:

After about a year’s closure due to construction in their building, we are happy to announce the reopening of our financial management client, Ward III. Not much has changed at this classic neighborhood standby; the quality of the cocktails is as high as ever and the bartenders are still producing the same delicious drinks that you love.
The cocktail list offers something for everyone, incorporating twists on classics as well as some brand new creations. The food is deliciously simple and comforting. On offer are bar snacks, small bites, and flatbreads. Our favorites were the deviled eggs and Sigmund’s soft pretzels.
The space is dimly lit – we would argue perfectly – yet warm and welcoming. The bartenders are masters of their craft and product fine cocktails while providing the guest with an exceptional experience. Jazz performances and events only add more reason to visit the space.

Whether you are already in the area, or make a special trip just to visit, we doubt you will be disappointed in your experience. The cocktail list and food menu offer something for everyone and the overall guest experience is on point. The only downside is that, because they were closed for so long, we have a lot of time to make up for!

As 2017 comes to its end, Eater takes a look back at the best restaurant designs of the year. Great restaurant design is transportive and transformative — and this year’s designs delivered.
Last year’s Eater Award winner for design of the year was Gwen in Los Angeles, and many restaurants this year seemed to adopt its principals: dramatic, Deco references and over-the-top glitz all combining for a sense of unabashed, unrestrained luxury. In 2017, openings like BLVD in Chicago (perhaps the most like Gwen with its bunker-like setting) and Born & Raised in San Diego kept this trend alive.
