Brooklyn patisserie, Sweet Melissa, is closing in Cobble Hill but the Park Slope location will remain open

The Cobble Hill location is the original storefront for the French bakery which opened 1998. Owner Melissa Murphy claims that the shop is now closed due to rising rent.
The Park Slope location is still open at 175 Seventh Avenue at First Street

3rd Ward preps to open a culinary incubator in 2013

With the help of Brooklyn locals and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, 3rd Ward Culinary Incubator will offer enrichment classes, a professional-grade working space, community events with a market-cafe.

McClure’s Pickles’ Informal Distribution Cooperative, which started in July 2011, helps specialty food purveyors with lower distribution prices

Traditional distributors charge a mark up of 15 – 20%. For businesses that hosts their product in the same space as McClure’s, the distribution charge is only 4% for 11 – 20 cases. Bob McClure, owner of McClure’s Pickles, now distributes product for Early Bird Granola, School House Kitchen
and more.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn thinks the McClure model of business has the potential to grow and is currently drafting a proposal to expand on the idea

Farm and Beer Expo at The Brooklyn Brewery tonight from 7pm – 10pm

Burgersmith is now open and serving grass-fed burgers on cast-iron in Cobble Hill

Plenty of burgers to go around in Brooklyn as the surge in fast casual restaurants that specialize in this beefy delight continues to grow. Burgersmith sources their secret beef recipe from a local butcher which is grounded daily.
The restaurant is open from 4pm – 11pm daily and is located on 209 Smith Street at the corner of Baltic Street

Founder Dara Furlow, launched the site last month after developing a love for the markets and specialty food items that Brooklyn has become well known for. The website’s mission is to give Brooklyn producers a national platform by shipping bundled products out on a monthly basis.
The founder is also thinking of taking the business to other places like Seattle, Portland, and Maine

Williamburg’s Mercado on Kent will be opening a bread bakery this Friday, January 27th. This is another mark of the New York City market-restaurant bakery trend

In addition to getting a new chef on board, Mercado on Kent’s bread bakery will also feature specialty olive oils and charcuterie. The bakery will be open from 9am – 3pm. Mercado on Kent is located on 291 Kent Avenue.
New York food blog, Fork in the Road, also mentions other eateries that are hopping on to the market-restaurant hybrid

Kim Ima, Owner of Treats Truck, plans to open up a brick and mortar location in Carroll Gardens

The bakery/cafe will offer breakfast and a light lunch menu along with those famous cookie “treats”.
The shop is expected to open mid-February or March of this year
