Food Almanac 2014: Food and Farm Policy

On Wednesday, Feb 12 from 6:30-9:30pm at the Center for Social Innovation, the Food Systems Network NYC will feature a panel discussion about food and farm policy predications as they relate to NYC and the nation. The event will commence with networking and passed hors d’oeuvres followed by the panel, dinner and a Q & A. Wine and local beer will be served. The panelists have not yet been revealed, but check back at Food Systems NYC to find out more.

Coffee & Tea Festival

The 9th annual Coffee & Tea Festival NYC will take place from Sat. 3/22-Sun 3/23 at the 69th Regiment Armory. Featured on Food Network’s Unwrapped, the festival will exhibit over 60 international tea and coffee varietals, and tastings will be available along with complementary (and complimentary) food. As per request, the 2014 lineup will showcase more coffee than prior years. Tickets are on sale now.

Third Annual Slow Food Show

This Sunday, December 8th from 1-6pm at the Astor Center Screening Room (399 Lafayette St.), Slow Foods will hold its third annual food vendor showcase featuring local producers. Samples will be offered and products available for purchase. Proceeds support Slow Foods NYC programs. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.

Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Flea: Tomorrow is Last Weekend Outdoors

Tomorrow and Sunday mark Smorgasburg’s and Brooklyn Flea’s last weekend outdoors for the season. Beginning the weekend of November 30th, the popular markets will relocate indoors to 80 North 5th St. (Wythe Ave.) until March 2014.

Hale & Hearty: Celebrity Chef Soups

Hale & Hearty will feature celebrity chef-created soups from mid-January until mid-March of 2014. Chefs Geoffrey Zakarian, Andrew Carmellini, John DeLucie and Marc Murphy have been confirmed for now. A portion of the proceeds from each soup sold will be donated to charity.

MOFAD Roundtable: NYC Soda Regulation

On Thursday, December 5th from 6:30-8pm, The Museum of Food and Drink will host a free roundtable event in which participants will debate their philosophies on soda regulation. Debaters will hail from a wide range of backgrounds including the New York City government, the beverage industry, public health professionals, small business groups, journalists and academics in the fields of public policy, philosophy, public health, and behavioral economics. The MOFAD roundtable will take place at CUNY School of Public Health, 2180 Third Ave, New York, NY. Jubilee Conference in March

The biannual magazine that celebrates women and food, Cherry Bombe, will be hosting its first food conference, “Jubilee,” in NYC on March 9th, 2014. Details such as venue and lineup will be revealed in January, and the conference promises to be much more than just another networking event. The magazine’s Editorial Director, Kerry Diamond, envisions a half-day conference with single person presentations, similar to Ted Talks, panel discussions, one-on-one interviews, and of course lots of eating. Tickets will go on sale in January; in the meantime, if your’e interested in participating contact the Jubilee team.

Thanksgiving Cronut Auction

Today marks the first day of the Thanksgiving-themed God’s Love We Deliver Cronut auction. Winners will receive two special pumpkin-cream filled Cronuts delivered in a designer carrier created by celebrities like Heidi Klum and Sandra Lee to their door Thanksgiving morning. Bid fast, the auction ends Nov. 26th!

Modernist Food Photography: Wed 11/20

Adam Gopnik and Nathan Myhrvold of The New Yorker will share the techniques, science and stories behind the culinary-centric photos that compose Myhrvold’s latest project, “The Photography of Modernist Cuisine“. Discover how the lens transformed revolutionary cuisine into visual masterpieces.

Broadway Bites: Midtown Food Fair

On Monday, Urbanspace NYC opened Broadway Bites, a new street fair in Herald Square. Passersby can select from an array of goods from twenty-five vendors including Roberta’s pizza and Red Hook Lobster Pound’s lobster rolls. Even those with gluten-free and vegetarian needs can find something to quench their cravings.

People who work in the area now have the chance to lunch somewhere out of the ordinary, and Urbanspace press rep Rachel Van Dolsen claims it will be a great opportunity to “activate the space a little more.” Urbanspace also embraced the concept as a means of showcasing New York’s artisan food scene, especially considering the number of chains in Midtown.
