Fairway Red Hook Annouces Reopening March 1
In what will be welcome news for neighboring residents and business, Fairway Red Hook announced this morning they will reopen on March 1.
The 52,000-square-foot waterfront grocery took on five feet of water during Hurricane Sandy, according to a report by the New York Times this fall.
Fairway Market, which has 350 employees, has long been noted as a major food destination in the area, attracting foot traffic from visitors that spreads to nearby smaller businesses.
Cochon 555 Kicks Off in New York February 10th
Cochon 555 will take place this Sunday, February 10th, at Pier Sixty. The traveling culinary competition and tasting event is coming to town and marking a culinary milestone with its 5th Anniversary Tour. Created to promote a national conversation around the sustainable farming of heritage-breed pigs, each event challenges local chefs (this year all female) to prepare a menu from the entirety of one 200 pound family-raised heritage breed of pig, nose-to-tail. Twenty judges and 400 guests help decide the winning chef by voting on the “best bite of the day”. The winner will be crowned the Princess of Porc and will compete at Grand Cochon event at the Classic in Aspen on Sunday, June 16.

A must-enter contest for food manufacturers in NYC: The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has partnered with the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) to offer four New York City companies the opportunity to showcase their products in city-sponsored booths at the NASFT 2013 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City. Winning businesses then receive an all-expense paid booth at the Summer Fancy Food Show.
